Trump mocks Grete Thunberg for failed attempt to reach Gaza
Thunberg had been part of a group of more than 400 activists attempting to sail to the blockaded territory but were intercepted by the Israeli navy on Friday. Over the weekend, over 130 participants were sent back to Türkiye, while the young activist herself was deported to Greece and Slovakia on Monday.
When questioned about Thunberg, Trump remarked, “she is a troublemaker.” He added, “She’s no longer into the environment, now she’s into this… She needs to see a doctor. She has an anger management problem,” speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Monday.
Reports from fellow activists and legal representatives on Saturday alleged that Thunberg and others endured “torture” and “harsh treatment” while held in an Israeli desert detention facility following their capture.
Authorities in West Jerusalem denied these allegations. National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir expressed that he was “proud” of the strict conditions under which the activists were confined.
Thunberg and Trump have exchanged criticisms online for several years, frequently responding to each other’s statements. In 2019, the president mocked her over her “anger management problem” after she was named Time’s Person of the Year. Thunberg later updated her Twitter (now X) biography to read: “A teenager working on her anger management problem.”
